Long Beach, California Housewife Sues after Police Shoot Her with a Taser for Calling 911
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) July 10, 2007 -- A 61-year-old Long Beach housewife has filed a lawsuit against Long Beach Police Chief Anthony W. Batts, Long Beach police officer Robert P. Curran and the City of Long Beach, after she was shot multiple times with a Taser weapon as she called 911. (Taneja v. City of Long Beach, et al, Case No. CV-07-4380 ER (MANx).)
According to the complaint, on November 10, 2006 at approximately 3:16 p.m., Kiran Taneja was in the backyard of her longtime residence speaking with a workman who was replacing screens on her home. A Long Beach police officer entered the yard with both of his hands on his Taser weapon shouting, "I'm going to shoot you, I'm going to shoot you."
When Ms Taneja dialed 911 to ask for assistance, she claims in the suit, the officer demanded she lie on the ground, even though several eyewitnesses report she presented no threat of harm to anyone around her. The Complaint alleges that, rather than allowing Ms. Taneja to speak with the 911 dispatcher, the officer repeatedly fired his Taser, striking her multiple times.
The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. It seeks damages for civil rights violations, battery and excessive use of force.
Attorney William A. Daniels of Schwartz, Daniels & Bradley in Agoura Hills, California is representing Ms. Taneja in the action.
