Artist Michele Guieu Selected for the Exhibition "ON/OFF: Art in the Digital Era" at the Cabrillo Gallery, California
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 12, 2007 -- Artist Michele Guieu's paintings about the Iraq war: "ex-POW Shoshana Johnson", "ex-POW Edgar Hernandez" and "Jill Carroll, Iraq, 2006" will be part of a juried exhibition in one of the finest Community College exhibition spaces in California.
The war in Iraq has been a particularly important recent source of inspiration for many of Guieu's pieces.
Guieu says, "I am interested in current world events, staying informed, and keeping my eyes opened. I feel a sense of duty as an artist to express my concerns and my views about the world in which I live."
Michele Guieu works in parallel on digital and painted pieces, and each field feeds and enriches the other. She is growing a strong body of work, mixing portraits of family members, soldiers in Iraq, and portraits of women. She is also working on a series of self-portraits.
Through her process of simplifying images, she provides a view of the essence of the event, moment, or place to connect ordinary people to extraordinary situations.
Michele Guieu has traveled extensively and now lives and works in San Diego, California, where she finds a strong attachment to the land, between the desert and the ocean, and the space that inspires her art.
She recently participated in "Cultural fusion: Exploring the Multi-Cultural Influences on the Arts of this Region" at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (2007), the Juried Biennal at the Cannon Gallery, Carlsbad (2007), the 2006 International Digital Exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute, the 2006 All Media Juried exhibition at the Palos Verdes Art Center, the "OMA 4" at the Oceanside Museum of Art (2005), and has won numerous awards.
The Cabrillo College Gallery is recognized throughout the state as one of the finest Community College exhibition spaces. As one of the largest college galleries in the Monterey Bay Area the Cabrillo Gallery hosts 12 exhibitions annually, six of which are in the gallery itself and six in the Enrollment Services Center. With a focus on national and international artists the gallery also hosts a very popular annual student exhibition.
The juror of "ON/OFF: Art in the Digital Era" is Sheila A. Malone, a new media artist and educator living in the San Fransisco Bay area. Currently she is adjunct faculty at Cabrillo College in the Art Photography Department. Formerly, she taught in the Conceptual Information Art Department at San Fransisco State University and the CADRE Laboratory for new media at San Jose State University.
