After the war, Atlanta was rebuilt and officially became Georgias capital in 1868. With the turn of the century, much development ensued and the city became an ethnic and cultural melting pot of diversity. Though racial tension occurred throughout the south, Atlanta was home to progressive efforts in human rights and set an early precedent for social reform.
