Bergstrom NITE No-Idle System receives approval from California Air Resources Board
Rockford, IL (PRWEB) September 11, 2008 -- Bergstrom Inc., an industry leader in the design and supply of climate systems to the commercial vehicle industry, today announced that its NITE System (http://www.nitesystem.com/) technology has received formal approval from the California Air Resources Board (ARB) with the certification number 08-643-004.
Since its formation in 1967, the California ARB has worked with the public and business sectors to find solutions to California's air pollution problem. The resulting air regulation standards continue to outpace the rest of the nation, and lead the way in establishing new anti-idling laws in an effort to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
The approval of the Bergstrom NITE (http://www.nitesystem.com/) (No-Idle Thermal Environment) system by this board formally certifies the standards Bergstrom sets in developing and designing climate systems for the commercial vehicle industry. The NITE system also meets or exceeds all EPA standards.
"Bergstrom is one of the most environmentally-friendly units in the market, and we are very pleased to have received this formal approval from the California ARB (http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm)," said Terry Zeigler, vice president of electrified systems at Bergstrom. "The benefits of using a battery-powered no-idle solution are tremendous. The engine-off heating and cooling system not only provides year-round comfort and saves money on fuel, but also complies with anti-idling laws and reduces emissions."
The NITE (http://www.nitesystem.com/)system can reduce the average truck's fuel usage, some by 3,790 gallons a year, and save the owner more than $15,500 a year in reduced fuel costs and maintenance, based on the national average of idling 8 hours a day, 300 days a year and current fuel prices.
"Drivers will start saving money on fuel immediately," said Zeigler. "This type of system is a simple and effective method of reducing emissions and complying with the increasingly complex anti-idling regulations across the country."
Bergstrom's NITE system was the first commercially-produced battery powered unit for the heavy trucking industry. Today, the company has the most non-engine driven systems on the road in the heavy trucking industry.
The system, which will be factory-installed in Navistar trucks in the fourth quarter of 2008, features a battery-powered and fully-electrified sleeper AC system for both over-the-road and engine-off operation. Unlike other battery-powered systems in the marketplace that are thermal storage devices, the NITE system is an actual air conditioning unit.
With the engine off, the sleeper AC system operates on deep-cycle batteries, and with the engine running, switches to the truck's engine driven electrical system.
