California Mother and Anti-Drug Advocate Publishes New Guidebook for All Parents
Rocklin, Calif. (PRWEB) October 18, 2006 -- In a startling new book published this month, Lost & Found: A Mother and Son Find Victory Over Teen Drug Addiction, author Christy Crandell (with co-author Cynthia Cutts) bravely recounts her eldest son’s descent into drug addiction.
Lost & Found, with an introduction by Mac Bledsoe, president and founder of the Drew Bledsoe Foundation, offers parents practical advice on identifying, deterring and preventing teen drug and alcohol abuse.
The book is self-published and is being sold through Christy Crandell’s web site: www.stopteendrugaddiction.com.
Christy poignantly describes in Lost & Found the strong foundation she and her husband Rick built for their boys – playing Little League, reading bedtime stories and living in a picturesque suburban community. Christy tells about her family’s idyllic life to illustrate the point that addiction can happen to anyone, anywhere.
Her son, Ryan, began abusing alcohol, marijuana and over-the-counter cold medicine in his adolescent years. Attempts at rehab failed. In a desperate moment and high on drugs, he took off on a crime spree that would ultimately seal his fate. He was three weeks past his 18th birthday when he was arrested and is currently serving a 13-year sentence in Folsom Prison where he wrote the riveting foreword to his mother’s book.
In detailing her son’s addiction and recovery, Christy talks about facets of drugs and alcohol that she wished she known about as a parent that will be immeasurably helpful to other parents wanting to safeguard their children. She writes:
·“I wish I’d known drug addiction respects no economic, educational or moral-value boundaries. Drug addiction happens to people from all walks of life.”
·“I wish I’d known to disregard concerns of trust between Ryan and me and to instead focus on stopping my son from risky behavior.”
·“I wish I’d known that alcohol is the most commonly used drug among teenagers. Parents often have a casual attitude about teenage alcohol use.”
·“I wish I’d known how important it is to be awake when your teen comes home in the evening. Give him or her a big hug and take a deep sniff for tell-tale signs of alcohol or marijuana use.”
Lost & Found also includes a number of resources for parents, including:
·a table of street drugs and prescription medications, which lists drug nicknames and common side effects
·a list of symptoms and signs of drug use
·a no-nonsense action plan if parents find evidence of drugs
·a list of frequently-asked questions about intervention strategies, including how to approach drug testing
·how to best handle excuses, such as the classic, “I was holding these drugs for my friend”
·a collection of web sites about addiction and recovery
Moving beyond the devastating heartache of her beloved son behind bars, Christy has written a book for every parent to educate them about the many aspects of identifying and deterring drug and alcohol abuse in their children.
